Free Press wins two awards for health-care coverage

THE Winnipeg Free Press has taken home two pieces of hardware for its health-care coverage.

The series Wounded in the Womb, a story on fetal alcohol spectrum disorder by Mary Agnes Welch, Carol Sanders and Mia Rabson, won the Hollobon Award, presented by the Health Care Public Relations Association for excellence in health-care reporting.

Another feature, a story on solvent abusers, entitled Life at Rock Bottom, written by Welch, was awarded second place.

Wounded in the Womb demonstrated the human cost of FASD and told heartening success stories of those who have overcome their disabilities. The series was funded by a $20,000 grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Life at Rock Bottom, meanwhile, humanized solvent sniffers by telling sufferers' stories.

"All too often, it's negative stories that receive the bulk of attention and are rewarded. We're particularly pleased that work which focuses on Manitoba's innovative FASD programs was recognized," said Julie Carl, deputy editor of the Free Press.

The Hollobon Award is presented annually by HCPRA Canada in honour of Joan Hollobon, a medical reporter at the Globe & Mail for 25 years. Winning entries are educational and feature an illness or condition, new or different treatment methods and new developments in health-care research or funding.
