CANADA Day is expected to be sunny with lots to do.

Winnipeg families will again be able to visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo for free on July 1 with the city covering the cost of admission as part of the Mayor's Family Day at the Zoo.

Mayor Sam Katz first supported free admission to the zoo in 2004 to mark its 100th anniversary and it has become part of the annual Canada Day celebrations at Assiniboine Park hosted by Canad Inns. An average of 18,500 visitors attend the Mayor's Family Day each year.

Assiniboine Park is serving free birthday cake at 3:30 p.m., with activities and entertainment all day including the Rusalka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Papa Mambo, Eagle and Hawk and fireworks to top it all off.

Starting at 2:45 p.m. at the Scotiabank Stage, up-and-coming high school bands, three of Manitoba's finest indie bands, and Winnipeg's Duhks perform, followed by the full Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and fireworks at 11 p.m. to cap off Canada's birthday.
