Friends express shock over Montana arrest

THERE'S one thing Christian Laurin's friends say about his character: He's a survivor.

And even though they're expressing shock atthe prospect of him facing a lengthy period of time in a federal U.S. prison, they say they know he'll pull through his ordeal.

Richard May, 20, knew Laurin from meeting him at a summer camp that teaches young people wilderness survival skills.

Over the time they spent together, May said he grew attached to the "totally fearless" young man that to this day he's still proud to call his friend.

"He's a really awesome guy, full of good energy and good spirits," May said in a brief interview Tuesday. He remembers Laurin being enthusiastic about skateboarding and canoeing.

He learned of Laurin's arrest and detention in Montana after seeing his mug shot in the Free Press. Even though he looked somewhat different than the young man he last saw a few years ago, May said Laurin was instantly recognizable.

May said he wants Laurin to know that people in Winnipeg support him as he proceeds to sentencing in April.

"I wish all the best for him and his family -- he's got a lot of friends out here pulling for him, that's for sure," May said.
