Gardening marks special May long
Like many folks, the Queen's representative in Manitoba and a provincial cabinet minister did a little gardening on the long weekend.
Outside the Manitoba legislature Monday, Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee and Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Flor Marcelino planted special shrubs to celebrate Victoria Day and Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
They planted two amber jubilee ninebark shrubs in front of the Queen Victoria statue north of the Manitoba Legislative Building.
When the Queen visited Manitoba in 2010, she took part in a ceremonial planting of the shrub developed by a nursery in Portage la Prairie to mark the Diamond Jubilee, Lee said.
Physocarpus opulifolius jefam, the shrub's botanical name, was developed by Jeffries Nurseries. It offers "a kaleidoscope of colours throughout the spring, summer and fall," the nursery's online brochure says.
The shrub the Queen planted near Government House during her visit almost two years ago has thrived and produces flowers with little white blossoms, Marcelino said.
Planting the shrubs on Victoria Day is fitting, given Queen Elizabeth is the only monarch besides Queen Victoria in the Commonwealth to reign for more than 60 years, Marcelino said.
At the time of the 2010 royal visit, the province promised to make the amber jubilee ninebark available to other legislative buildings and government houses as Manitoba's gift to the nation as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
More than 300 shrubs have been requested, said Dwight MacAulay, chief of protocol and co-chairman of Manitoba's Diamond Jubilee committee. The public can buy them at garden centres throughout Manitoba, a spokeswoman for Jeffries said Monday.
