Girl not a bully, shouldn't have been suspended, says mom

A Winnipeg mother is outraged that her daughter has been labelled a cyberbully and suspended from school after creating a Facebook page about a fellow student.

"This has been blown all out of proportion," the mother said Thursday. "It was not a bullying web page. It had no comments made by the child (her daughter) who created it."

The mother said the title of the Facebook page contained the name of a Grade 7 girl, followed by "needs to chill."

"It should not have went this far," the mother said. "A girl needs to chill -- that's not bullying."

The mother of the girl named on the now-defunct Facebook site said earlier this week that her daughter was very upset when she discovered it last Sunday.

The Facebook site attacked her and invited other students to ridicule her, said the target's mother, who went to authorities at Chief Peguis Junior High on Monday.

River East School Division has confirmed that one student was suspended for activities taking place outside school, but would not release any other details.

But the mother of the suspended girl says she was very upset to learn that the other parent had gone to the media. Even though the division did not release any names, "Everyone's going to know who that girl was" who was suspended, she said. "My daughter apologized to the student."
