Global Winnipeg sends HD signal over airwaves

Most TV watchers were unaware as Global TV began broadcasting high-definition programming in Winnipeg over the air Thursday afternoon.

"Winnipeg is an important market for Global," said Troy Reeb, vice-president of ShawMedia Global TV. "We're the only network to move to over-the-air HD in that market. We think that shows our commitment to Winnipeg."

For TV owners with cable, MTS Television or satellite, you can already get most, if not all, television programming in high definition.

What Global did was send a high-definition signal over the air -- the way TV used to be transmitted before cable.

Experts say over-the-air HD is better quality -- the signal is not compressed -- and it's free. Of course, you can only watch it if you have an HD receiver, antenna, a flat-screen TV and are not hooked up to cable, satellite or MTS Television.

A spokesman for electronics retailer Advance said that's a pretty small market right now, and with only Global broadcasting HD over the air, few people will give up their satellite or cable and buy a special HD tuner.

Bruce Walzer, a West End resident, said he caught some Global programming Thursday night as he watched on his computer that has the special tuner.

"It was excellent," he said.

Reeb said Global had planned to formally announce the development next week.
