GOOD DOG!

From hashbrowns to Half Pints, this pub is perfect

I have always had a taste for pub culture and an appreciation of its role in a community as a gathering point for the locals to hang out, eat and have the occasional pint.

The Yellow Dog Tavern at 388 Donald Ave. fills this role perfectly.

Bartender Greg Ash is always around to make sure a hockey game is on, since many of the regulars are passionate fans. Greg, himself, has encyclopedic knowledge of the game, which encourages an intelligent hockey discourse. I appreciate that. At the same time, there is, thankfully, no scent of a sports-bar atmosphere.

It's a personal mission of mine to expose the world to the fact the Yellow Dog has a great breakfast. Al Friend, one of the cooks, is the former owner of Ham and Eggs Grill, a once-legendary Winnipeg institution for those who appreciate diner-style food.

Al, in my opinion, is one of the few human beings in the world who understand what a serving of hash browns is supposed to be and, more importantly, how to properly make it. At $5 for a classic breakfast, the dollar-to-quality ratio is unsurpassed.

Many local artists, musicians and poets frequent the place, enjoying many incarnations of Half Pints. Greg takes a particular pride in serving the products of this local brewery to his patrons.

The genuine, relaxed atmosphere is always present among the diverse range of patrons. The Yellow Dog offers a unique alternative to some of the other pub-style establishments one can find in our city.
