Gorbachev to act as guest editor of Free Press

IN a first for the Free Press, the newspaper will have a guest editor at the helm -- former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.
Gorbachev, who makes his first visit to Winnipeg to speak at We Day Manitoba, will bring his global perspective to Tuesday's paper.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner will share with readers his message of hope for the next generation of leaders as well as the concerns now on his radar screen for our planet via an exclusive column. Gorbachev will also set out three editorial priorities for Free Press reporters, photographers and editors working on that special edition.
"I would like to outline issues that I believe are important to the citizens of Winnipeg, and the world, and worthy of examination in Tuesday's edition of the Free Press,'' said Gorbachev.
Under Gorbachev's editorial direction, the Free Press will produce stories throughout all sections of the paper that not only reflect the themes he wants addressed but also connect with today's youth, a generation that fills him with hope for the future.
Free Press editor Paul Samyn said it's an honour to have someone of Gorbachev's stature shape the newspaper.
"I am thrilled that someone who made headlines in our newspaper as he changed the face of world history will be helping determine the headlines we deliver for our readers in Tuesday's paper,'' said Samyn.
"Mikhail Gorbachev is a man who possesses the kind of perspective and personality, context and courage that most newsrooms can only dream of having at their disposal. I can't wait to share that experience with our readers."
The Free Press is encouraging readers to send their message to Gorbachev either through a letter to the editor or as an online comment posted to this story. We will run a selection of them in our paper.
About 18,000 youth and educators will fill the MTS Centre on Tuesday to participate in We Day, an annual program aimed at inspiring youth to lead positive local and global change.
