Green Streets program back in town

WINNIPEG will have a chance to be a little more leafy green this spring.

The Green Streets program, which helps bring trees to Canada's urban communities, will once again be available to the Prairie provinces after it was put on hiatus last year due to a lack of funding.

Tree Canada, which runs the program, has partnered with TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to sponsor grants for communities across the country for more treed urban areas.

"Eighty per cent of communities now live in cities," said Michael Rosen, president of Tree Canada. "Trees in those cities perform an incredibly important part of that environment."

Before Tree Canada acquired TD FEF as the national sponsor, funding to communities was based on regional sponsorship, which varied from year to year. Some years, the Prairie region didn't have the sponsorship to help them take part in the program, Rosen said.

Communities can apply for funding online at treecanada.ca. The nominations will close April 6. The recipients will be announced in late April.
