Hearings into conduct of judge to start soon

OTTAWA -- Public hearings into the conduct of former associate chief justice in Manitoba Lori Douglas will finally begin later this month.

The Canadian Judicial Council announced Tuesday the initial hearing to determine standing, intervenors and counsel, will be held in Winnipeg on May 19. The hearing comes more than 20 months after a former client of her husband, lawyer Jack King, came forward with allegations of sexual harassment.

Alex Chapman alleged he was paid $25,000 to keep quiet after King sent him sent nude photos of Douglas and asked if Chapman would have sex with her. This occurred before she was appointed to the bench.

Chapman complained about King to the Manitoba Law Society and about Douglas to the Canadian Judicial Council. The CJC oversees the conduct of federally appointed judges.

Douglas stepped down from her duties as a judge awaiting the outcome of the complaint.
