Hens in city a step closer to being legal

THE City of Winnipeg is one step closer to studying the idea of allowing city residents to keep egg-laying hens in their backyards.

City council's Riel community committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to ask city staff to explore the idea, which would involve changing city zoning bylaws and other rules.

A St. Boniface resident appeared before the committee to argue in favour of the practice, which is permitted by several North American cities as a food-security measure.

Couns. Dan Vandal (St. Boniface), Justin Swandel (St. Norbert) and Gord Steeves (St. Vital) said they had some misgivings about the idea but felt there was no harm in looking into it.

Their request still faces approval from other council committees. If it makes it through council, a report could be issued as early as this fall.
