High-risk sex offender arrested shortly after release

A high-risk sex offender is back behind bars after allegedly breaching conditions of his community release less than three weeks after tasting freedom.

Winston George Thomas, 35, was released from the Headingley Correctional Centre on Feb. 24 following his latest conviction. Police issued a community notification at the time, warning "women of all ages... that they are at risk of sexual violence."

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit vowed to watch Thomas closely -- and that led to them rearresting him Thursday on a charge of breaching his probation. No other details were provided.

Thomas has numerous criminal convictions, including two counts of sexual assault. His latest crime involved sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in March 2007, after he and two other men met her at a Winnipeg shopping centre. He was sentenced to two years less a day followed by three years of probation.

Police are asking anyone with further information about Thomas to contact them at 204-984-1888.
