High winds delay search for remains

THE search for Tanya Nepinak's remains at the Brady Road Landfill was cancelled Tuesday due to high winds.

Police said weather conditions made it unsafe for the searchers, members of the Winnipeg Police Service forensic identification unit.

The search could resume as early as today, if the weather co-operates.

Police believe Nepinak, 31, was slain on Sept. 13, 2011, and her body was placed in a trash bin, which was later emptied at the landfill.

While searches of landfills for human remains have only a slight chance of success, Winnipeg police Chief Keith McCaskill initially said they would proceed with a search of a large section of the landfill.

That plan changed when the chief said recent information indicated it's possible Nepinak's remains could have ended up buried in three or more locations throughout the massive site, instead of just one, making a large search futile.

That area of the search was scaled down considerably, and the area to be searched now is about the size of a large room and will last a few days. The area was pinpointed by aboriginal elders during spiritual ceremonies.
