Home runs at the Home Expression Show

  • Print

Hot tubs, granite countertops, new windows and patio furniture crowded into the convention centre this weekend for the annual Home Expressions home-and-garden show. Hundreds of people roamed past the displays, planning renovation jobs to tackle this year. It's the 40th anniversary of the home show, and a highlight this year was the hockey-fan cave, a den decked out with a hot tub, tons of NHL-related decor and a patch of synthetic ice.

We asked a few patrons what inspires them.

Norm and Vienna Black

What's first on your to-do list now that it's spring?

Vienna Black: Change the wood stove to a gas-burning fireplace. We're getting too old to chop wood.

What has given you home-show envy?:

Norm Black: Windows. The other thing after that, is kitchen cabinets. We got some nice ideas for kitchen cabinets.

What trend aren't you so crazy about?:

Norm: Maybe granite countertops. I don't like them because they're not forgiving, when you drop something. When the fad wears off, what do you do with them?

Debbie Skrabek

What's first on your to-do list now that it's spring?

Debbie Skrabek: I'm building a new house. There will be the granite, and a walk-out kitchen onto the patio that will have the hot tub and an arbour over it. The top-down, bottom-up curtains are a must. They're absolutely gorgeous. I love them. It will have windows and windows and windows. We might try geothermal, just because we've never done that.

What has given you home-show envy?

Debbie: I'm old enough now that if love it and I've got to have it, I will have it.

What trend aren't you so crazy about?

Debbie: I don't like the cupboards with the horizontal doors. When they come down, you have to reach across and that's sort of a pain. And then the ones that open up, when they get old it's going to come down and hit you in the head.

Patti Dola

What's first on your to-do list now that it's spring?

Patti Dola: My spring cleaning is done already, so it will be on the outside of the house. What I'm hoping to get done is put some of that faux stone on the front. That, and doors.

What has given you home-show envy?

Patti: (Pointing to the kitchen cabinet displays) Look that way! I would like new cabinets, too, but one thing at a time. And new kitchen flooring.

What trend aren't you so crazy about?

Patti: I really couldn't say. If I really didn't like something, a display, I just walk by it. Everything looks good.
