Hotel lures romantics with suites evoking 'intriguing India, passionate Hawaii'

WINNIPEG - A hotel in downtown Winnipeg has found itself in exalted company, romantically speaking.

The Mariaggi's Theme Suites Hotel is among the world's 10 most romantic hotels, according to a TripAdvisor list based on travellers' reviews.

That puts it in the same league as establishments in French Polynesia, Mexico, Fiji, St. Lucia, Greece and Hawaii, the other locales on the list.

Mariaggi's, ranked No. 9, advertises suites decorated to evoke various world destinations, including "romantic Rome, intriguing India, passionate Hawaii."

The Africa safari suite creates "the mood of an African jungle" with a grass-thatched hut over the bed and hot tub. The Morocco suite features a "sheik's tent," stereo speakers inside the shower, Moroccan statues and burning incense.

"We really have gone to extremes to make our rooms a different experience," said hotel owner Don Laluk, adding that most of his clientele is from the Winnipeg area.

"Basically, people go to a hotel to sleep," he said — but not at Mariaggi's.

"We've had couples here for two nights and they haven't even left the room."

Overnight weekend rates start at $285, he said. There is also a daytime getaway, from $165, for up to eight hours.

No. 1 on the TripAdvisor list is the Four Seasons in Bora Bora. The resort is "surrounded by sand-fringed islets on an outer coral reef that encloses a turquoise lagoon," according to the Four Seasons website.
