House fire fatal for resident in N. Kildonan

ONE man is dead in an afternoon fire in a suburban home in North Kildonan.

Firefighters were called to a split-level home in the 100 block of Merrill Cres. at about 1 p.m. on Friday. The fire was in the second floor.

The home is registered in the name of Dmytro and Kateryna Syrota, an elderly couple. A son, Peter, possibly in his 60s, also lived in the house. However, Kateryna died a few weeks ago, said a neighbour, Greg Pohl.

Police are not identifying the deceased.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage to the home is estimated at $150,000 and $50,000 to the contents.
