In Brief
Pilot unhurt in crash
A 75-year-old pilot from Ashern walked away without injury after his ultralight plane hit hydro lines and crashed near Highway 6 Wednesday morning.
RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish said the plane crashed about two kilometres south of Ashern around 8 a.m.
"He was the sole occupant on board the plane," Karpish said. "Early indications are that the pilot experienced mechanical difficulties. The pilot attempted to land the plane to a nearby local airstrip; however, while descending, the plane came into contact with a hydro line and made a forced landing in a field near Highway 6."
Karpish said there was no indication of power outages in the area.
The Transportation Safety Board and the RCMP are continuing to investigate. The name of the pilot is not being released.
Bear killed in Steinbach
STEINBACH RCMP killed a black bear Wednesday morning after it wandered into a residential area and too close to a school.
Cpl. Miles Hiebert said the adult bear was first spotted downtown about 8:30 a.m. in front of the Shoppers Drug Mart. Police followed the highly agitated bear as it moved quickly throughout the city.
RCMP contacted Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship; however, their officers were not able to immediately attend, Hiebert said.
RCMP officers followed the bear into a residential area in the vicinity of a school. This was the first day of students returning to school, and police said there were large numbers of children in the area.
"As the bear was acting in an agitated manner in a residential area, the decision was made to destroy the bear in the interest of public safety," Hiebert said.
Reward for pilfered buggy
Bike-buggy rustlers have infuriated Chad Celaire by stealing his beloved Bee2gether Buggy just as he was preparing to shut down for the season.
The blue four-seater buggy is the pride of Bee2gether Tandem Bike Rentals and Sales, operated out of The Forks, Assiniboine Park and Birds Hill Provincial Park, Celaire said Wednesday.
The particular purloined buggy is worth $3,000 and was manufactured in the Netherlands.
Three people rented the buggy last last week and have not been seen again. Celaire said there was one report of a sighting in Central Park.
Celaire has put up a $200 reward for information leading to the recovery of the buggy.
