Downtown crash kills motorist

A 53-year-old man has died from his injuries in a multiple-vehicle collision on Portage Avenue downtown Monday, police say.

The man was driving a Chevrolet Lumina west on Portage about 12:10 p.m. when he swerved into the eastbound lanes near Young Street. The Lumina was hit on the driver's side by an oncoming Chevrolet TrailBlazer, police say. There was a secondary collision with a Ford Contour, also travelling east.

Anne Clarkson witnessed the crash and said a silver sedan was driving west on Portage when it appeared to slide into oncoming traffic heading east. Clarkson said the sedan appeared to be speeding when it drove into the eastbound lanes and slammed into a black SUV.

The driver's side of the silver sedan was completely ripped open. "I'm still shaken," Clarkson said. "It just happened so fast."

New provincial map more detailed

A new Manitoba highway map was released Tuesday, upgraded to provide more details on the 511 traveller information system.

The map is also available online at www.manitoba.ca/mit/map/index.html, which shows an overview of the province. Users can select specific regions that can be enlarged to provide more detail and downloaded.

The new map features local artist Glenn Hayes's painting of a Manitoba highway scene.

The map has been updated to include details on how to access road information through the 511 system and Twitter @MBGovRoads, and to show five recently created provincial parks.

The maps are free and Travel Manitoba distributes them at various locations such as travel info centres, The Forks and border crossings.

Young man hit by vehicle dies

An 18-year-old city man has died after a vehicle hit him more than a week ago on the overpass ramp at the south Perimeter Highway.

Brandon Flis, a Transcona resident, died Monday night, a family member confirmed Tuesday.

He was hit shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30 on the overpass. Initially, it was deemed a hit-and-run, but a 27-year-old man turned himself in a day after the collision and faces charges of failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm and driving without a licence.
