In brief
Film spotlights flooding
THE University of Manitoba will host a free screening of the short film Flooding Hope: the Lake St. Martin First Nation Story on Oct. 26.
It was written by Myrle Ballard, a Lake St. Martin First Nation member who has a doctorate from the Natural Resources Institute, and Prof. Shirley Thompson.
The film shows how years of water-management projects have affected the First Nation, resulting in displacement in 2011 and a multimillion-dollar water channel beside their permanently evacuated reserve. It highlights political, environmental, social, cultural and economic effects as well as the role of the provincial government.
It's being shown at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Wallace Building, 125 Dysart Rd. The film has also been posted on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?vSQStePF5jeg)
Crash blamed on racing
RCMP believe two men in their 20s were street racing in the middle of the night when one of them died after crashing into a light pole in Swan River on Sept. 30.
A 25-year-old Minitonas man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while street racing.
He will appear in court Nov. 21.
Police have not released the name of the victim, a 26-year-old man from Swan River. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt and speed was a factor.
