Parking rates going up

PARKING rates are set to double in high-demand areas downtown starting Nov. 13.

City of Winnipeg officials said hourly parking rates are set to rise to $2 from $1 at 143 pay stations downtown and in the Exchange. The pay stations will be clearly marked to differentiate them from other pay stations.

All 667 on-street pay stations will be programmed and upgraded to allow them to accept new loonies and toonies. Once a coin acceptor has been upgraded, a decal will be applied adjacent to the coin slot to flag that the machine can accept the new coins.

In July, city council voted to restrict on-street parking to two hours and raise rates on high-use downtown streets from a loonie to a toonie per hour. The move is expected to free up more on-street parking in the downtown area. Winnipeg is poised to start metered parking one hour earlier, at 8 a.m., and extend metered parking to 8:30 p.m. in selected blocks around the MTS Centre.

In April, the city will start metered parking one hour earlier at all on-street pay stations and extend downtown evening metered parking until 8:30 p.m.

Owners to appeal order

OWNERS of the Boyd Building will appeal an order to get rid of a parking lot on a vacant plot of land on Portage Avenue.

In September, City of Winnipeg officials ordered building owners, Boyd Building Inc., to remove all vehicles from the vacant property between 398 and 402 Portage Ave. City officials said failure to remove the vehicles will result in legal action.

Company president Ken Carroll plans to appeal the order at council's downtown development meeting next week.

In August, the building owners finally removed an unapproved electronic sign from the property after flouting multiple orders for two years.

The sign was initially installed in September 2010 without a city permit. Residents of Fred Douglas Place complained of glare from the sign and the city ordered it be removed in late 2010 and again in early 2011, when the sign was finally switched off.
