Contraband smokes seized

TWO men have been charged with possessing contraband cigarettes after RCMP seized 4,900 cartons.

RCMP said officers from the Powerview detachment stopped a pickup truck just after 1 p.m. Dec. 20.

The truck was towing a rental trailer that contained 4,900 cartons of contraband cigarettes, or about 980,000 individual cigarettes, with an estimated street value of about $150,000.

The 32-year-old male driver from Fort Alexander and a 52-year-old male passenger from Winnipeg face charges of possession of contraband tobacco under the Excise Act.

Charges in deadly crash

THE driver of a pickup truck that collided with another truck in a deadly collision just north of The Pas last week is facing charges.

RCMP said John Anthony Ducharme, 44, of Opaskwayak Cree Nation, has been charged with impaired driving causing death and driving while prohibited.

Ducharme was allegedly driving a southbound pickup on Highway 10, about 15 kilometres north of The Pas, when he drifted across the centre lane and struck a northbound pickup.

The force of the collision threw both trucks into the east ditch. Emergency responders had to extricate both drivers from their trucks.

The driver of the northbound truck, a 63-year-old man from Shoal River First Nation, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said his name will not be released.

The collision is still under investigation and police said other charges will likely be filed against Ducharme.
