Gunman robs couple responding to ad

A young couple hoping to buy a discounted iPhone 5 were robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night in the city's North End.

The couple saw an ad on the online classified service Kijiji for an iPhone5 and made arrangements through email to meet the seller in the 300 block of Magnus Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. They were given an address and told it was the seller's home.

The couple said they arrived, thought the neighbourhood was unsafe, so contacted the seller via email and asked him to meet them at their car. The seller insisted the couple go to the door.

When the couple went to the home, the resident said he knew nothing about the ad.

As the couple were getting back into their vehicle, they were confronted by a suspect with a sawed-off shotgun who demanded their money.

"I got in and then my girlfriend, but before she could close the car door, he placed the gun barrel inside so she couldn't close the door," the 22-year-old man said. "He pointed the barrel at her. She was really scared. He wanted the money. We gave it to him and then he told us to drive off and he took off."

The couple said they are convinced the robber was the same person they had been dealing with, and that he gave them the false address to rob them.

Winnipeg police confirmed the robbery and that no arrests had been made.

The couple said police told them another robbery in a similar fashion had taken place a week before.

Police said people should exercise caution before buying or selling items through the Internet.

'Power-saving' offer a credit card scam

WINNIPEG police issued a warning Wednesday about a phone scam.

Fraudulent telephone calls have been made with the caller identifying himself as a Manitoba Hydro associate offering to sell a "power-saving device" and asking for a credit card number to expedite the order.

Police said Manitoba Hydro offers no such product and does no telephone soliciting. Police said anyone receiving such a call should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If anyone has given their credit card number to the scammers, they're asked to contact the centre as well as police.

Garbage, recycling pickup on Riel Day

GARBAGE and recycling will be collected on Louis Riel Day.

City of Winnipeg officials said Monday's regularly scheduled garbage and recycling pickup will continue on the holiday. All civic offices, libraries and leisure centres will be closed on Louis Riel Day, and Winnipeg Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule.

All city pools will be closed Monday except for Pan Am Pool, which will be open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex, which will be open between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Store owner charged with bootlegging

A store owner in the Interlake has been charged with bootlegging.

The RCMP said officers were involved in a joint investigation with Manitoba Liquor Control Commission staff and it resulted in charges Monday against Bilinski Enterprises Ltd., operators of The Other Place in Riverton.

The company has been charged with three counts of unlawful sale of alcohol, selling alcohol out of hours and selling of alcohol for resale.

The company was served with a summons to appear April 15 in Arborg provincial court.
