Family of five escapes house fire

A family of five escaped tragedy when an electrical fire tore through their Hamiota home early Friday morning.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene around 1:30 a.m., the fire, which started in the garage, had already spread to the attic, RCMP said.

The family managed to escape unharmed.

The fire is being blamed on an accidental electrical failure, RCMP said.

The cost of the damage is currently unknown, but it will be some time before the family is able to return to their home.

Truck driver hospitalized following crash

A 40-year-old Grandview semi-trailer driver is in a Winnipeg hospital after a single-vehicle crash Friday morning.

RCMP say around 9 a.m., officers responsed to the crash on Highway 5 at Lake of the Prairies.

Their investigation showed the semi-trailer was going west on Highway 5 when it jacknifed and slid into the ditch. The truck was hauling grain.

The driver's injuries are non-life-threatening, RCMP say.

The crash is being investigated.

Lake of the Prairies is in western Manitoba, north of Russell.

The thefts took place between Nov. 29 and Dec. 24. Residences on Pritchard Avenue, St. John's Avenue, Salter Street and Mountain Avenue, as well as a business on Main Street, were targeted.

Various home renovation items -- including copper pipe and kitchen appliances -- were stolen.

Following an investigation, police located some of the stolen items in the 100 block of Magnus Avenue and the 200 block of Mountain Avenue.

Two men, aged 28 and 29, were arrested in connection with the crimes.

Trio busted after Christmas crime tear

Three people are facing charges following a Christmas crime spree.

Things got underway at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, when a 1993 Buick Regal was stolen out of a garage in the 900 block of Beecher Avenue. The suspects then proceeded to break into two residences (one in the 700 block of Swailes Avenue, the other in the 100 block of Birchbark Bay), where various items were stolen.

Winnipeg police tracked down the vehicle in the 400 block of Redwood Avenue early Thursday morning, where they arrested a man and a woman. A third person, a man, was later arrested at the same address.

A search of the residence uncovered a number of weapons, including three hunting knives, bear spray, two firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition.

Matthew Valentine, 23, Heather Muckle, 21, and Benjamin Cooper, 35, were all charged with various theft and weapons-related offences.

All three remain in custody.
