Stolen bikes lead to arrests
Three youths have been charged after a series of thefts in St. Vital.
Police found three boys in the area of St. Mary's Road and Warde Avenue around 6 a.m. Friday. After speaking with them, officers learned the bikes the boys were riding had allegedly been stolen.
The youths were turned over to members of the East District Crime Unit, who continued the investigation.
Police say the boys -- ages 12, 13 and 16 -- are also responsible for thefts throughout the night at various locations in the St. Vital area and stole property from several vehicles, yards and a garage.
The areas where thefts from vehicles have been confirmed include the 100 block of Hirt Crescent, the 200 block of Barlow Court, the 600 block of John Forsyth Road, the first 100 block of Yachts Cove and the first 100 block of Paddington Road.
The three youths have been charged with several theft-related offences. All three were detained in custody.
Police are still investigating. Anyone who was a victim of theft in the St. Vital area Thursday night or early Friday morning is asked to call investigators at 204-986-2857.
Smoking blamed for $1.1-M fire
Smoking has been determined to be the cause of a house fire in St. Vital that destroyed two homes Friday afternoon and threatened a third.
City officials said Saturday the blaze, which was reported just before 1:20 p.m., was caused by "careless disposal of smoking materials." The two-storey homes at 52 and 54 Nichol Ave. sustained combined damages of more than $1.1 million, and city spokeswoman Lisa Fraser said both homes were total losses. The third house that was in danger was not damaged.
All three homes were evacuated. There were no injuries.
