Detectives continue to investigate a Friday-night slaying that is the city's 29th homicide of 2012.
At about 9:45 p.m. Friday, police went to a house in the 500 block of St. Catherine Street in St. Boniface after a report a 49-year-old had been assaulted.
The man was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said Saturday.
The victim has been identified by police as Orland Joseph Adams.

Boy, 7, dies after crash
A seven-year-old boy died from injuries Saturday after a two-vehicle collision Thursday near Selkirk.
At about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, a northbound Dodge Caravan collided with a southbound Nissan Rogue SUV on Highway 9 at the junction of Highway 44, RCMP said.
The boy, from the RM of St. Andrews, was a passenger in the van. He was one of three people in the vehicles who were taken to hospital.
Stranger entices girl, 10
WINNIPEG police are looking for a 50-year-old man after a stranger approached a 10-year-old girl Friday in the Westwood area and offered her a ride.
The girl was walking near the intersection of Sansome Avenue and Rouge Road around noon when she was approached by a man in a white van. She didn't speak with him and continued on her way to school, where she reported the incident to her teacher.
The man is described as African-Canadian, about 50 years old, short, bald, but with curly hair on the sides, and having yellow, broken teeth. He spoke in a deep voice and had no accent. He was wearing a black jacket or sweater.
The van is described as having tinted windows, rust along the bottom and scratches along the side.
