Intoxicated grad dies after leap from auto
AN 18-year-old man being escorted home from a safe grad by chaperones died early Friday when he jumped from the moving vehicle, the RCMP said.
The man was intoxicated and being taken home from the grad at Margaret Barbour Collegiate Institute when he jumped from the vehicle about 15 kilometres west of The Pas.
He was taken to the local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the RCMP said.
Sgt. Lee Fortin of The Pas RCMP said there was no indication the man was trying to commit suicide.
He said police were still waiting for toxicology results.
The man was in a vehicle with two adults, a man and a woman.
Fortin didn't comment on the nature of the relationship between the chaperones and the youth.
"I've never seen anything like this before," said Fortin, who called it an "unfortunate incident."
More than 40 become ill
after River East banquet
HEALTH officials are investigating why more than 40 people who attended a River East Collegiate graduation event became ill.
The students attended their grad banquet at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on Tuesday.
On Thursday, people started getting ill, said the parent of one grad who was sick with vomiting and diarrhea.
On Friday, a formal complaint was made to authorities.
"It was referred to public health officials for immediate followup and investigation," a spokeswoman for Manitoba Health said.
The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority said it's looking into the matter but hasn't been made aware of any serious cases of illness.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the sickness and whether it was a virus, food-related or caused by something else.
Officials from the school and the graduation committee did not respond to requests for comment.
