Israel Pavilion gets political visitors

  • Print

THE Israel Pavilion at the Asper Jewish Community Campus is getting a lot of political love this week.

Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver suddenly added a visit to the pavilion to his itinerary in Winnipeg Thursday night. Oliver is coming to the city for a Manitoba Chambers of Commerce luncheon today.

On Thursday afternoon, his office also announced he would be meeting with Jewish community leaders and visiting the Israel Pavilion, along with Winnipeg South Centre MP Joyce Bateman.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will be attending the Israel Pavilion tonight.

Winnipeg South Centre will be one of the most hotly contested ridings between the Liberals and Conservatives in the next election, and it has the province's largest concentration of Jewish voters. It has one of the 10 largest Jewish populations in Canada, says Statistics Canada.

It was the longest Liberal-held seat in Western Canada until Bateman delivered an upset victory over Liberal Anita Neville in 2011. Bateman will face off against ex-Business Council of Manitoba president Jim Carr in 2015.
