Jewish foundation bears $2M in gifts

WHEN times get tough, the tough keep giving. The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba will present $2 million in donations to Jewish and non-Jewish groups within Winnipeg between now and January.

Two hundred cheques will be given out, some of which will be hand-delivered by board members and volunteers in the next two weeks, CEO Marsha Cowan said.

"This is a nice way for (volunteers and board members) to have a nice personal feel about the distribution that we're doing at this time of year," she said. "It allows them to be involved."

The group will give donations to a variety of organizations including CancerCare Manitoba, the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Folk Arts Council of Winnipeg, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and the DASH (Domestic Abuse Stops Here) Foundation.

Lillian Neaman, a board member of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, personally delivered a $4,250 cheque to the Misericordia Hospital on Monday.

"It's very meaningful to me, particularly at this time of year," she said, referring to Hanukkah, which begins on Sunday. "I think it's important that the general community knows how much the Jewish community cares. We don't just support our own."

The money from the foundation will go toward Misericordia Hospital's $17.5-million redevelopment plan, according to Kevin Hunter, executive director of the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.

"They're an organization that we often turn to for help," he said.

He added that the redevelopment plan includes centralizing the hospital's eye-care centre, constructing a new diagnostic-imaging centre, improving a sleep disorder centre, and launching a senior health facility.

The foundation manages a growing endowment fund that exceeds $70 million. Donor-designated funds are given out at the end of each year.

"It's a way of giving a longer term gift," marketing director Marj Wiebe said.

Since 1964, the foundation has distributed more than $30 million in scholarships and grants for educational programs, social services, arts and culture, health services and religious programs.
