Justice Minister Swan backs Bellamy in nomination battle

PROVINCIAL Justice Minister Andrew Swan has publicly endorsed Keith Bellamy in the race for the NDP nomination for Winnipeg's Daniel McIntyre ward.

Bellamy, a constituency assistant to Winnipeg Centre MP Pat Martin, faces off against incumbent Coun. Harvey Smith in a May 30 nomination contest.

At a press conference at city hall on Friday, Swan was asked whether he will vote for Mayor Sam Katz or former NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis in this fall's mayoral contest.

The NDP justice minister replied he will vote for Bellamy in Daniel McIntyre.

Bellamy helped managed Swan's short-lived campaign for the NDP leadership last fall.

Smith has served as councillor from 1980 to 1986 and from 1998 until the present.
