A police identification truck is parked in front of the Lord Selkirk Park Towers Friday morning.

One man is dead and another is in custody following a late-night drinking party at an apartment block in Winnipeg's North End.

At around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Winnipeg police and paramedics rushed a man to hospital in critical condition from the Lord Selkirk Park Towers complex at 269 Dufferin Ave. following a confrontation with another individual.

The man died from his injuries a short time later.

It is Winnipeg's first homicide of the new year.

Initial accounts say the man was at a small party in a fifth-floor suite, when he got into an altercation and was stabbed in the neck. According to residents, police and emergency crews found the man on the third floor.

Police would not confirm the nature of the man's injuries.

People close to the scene say the Lord Selkirk Park apartment block is a hub for late-night activity.

"This building is always full of trouble," said John Vivier, whose brother Dean lives in the complex. "It used to be for seniors, but it's no longer for seniors anymore. Now they let everybody in there and there's all kind of trouble all the time."

Vivier said he visits his brother frequently and says the block is not a "user-friendly building." Because of this, he says, he is reluctant to bring his grandchildren there to visit his brother.

One tenant said the police have been at the apartment block "three or more times" over the past week.

"It's a situation where you don't know what's going to happen every night," said the tenant, who wished to remain anonymous.

A Winnipeg police spokeswoman couldn't confirm the increased police presence in relation to the apartment block.

Identification and homicide units were at the scene for most of the day Friday. The two men knew each other, the police confirmed, but the details surrounding the assault -- including the possible weapon and motive -- were not available.

Police have not released the victim's name or his age. A suspect was in police custody Friday.
