Latest snow cleanup to cost a cool $4M

WINNIPEG'S latest snowfall is expected to cost the city about $4 million.
City officials launched a snow-clearing operation Monday night to clear the main streets. On Tuesday, plows continued clearing main routes, bus routes, collector streets and sidewalks.
About 150 pieces of equipment will be used for the cleanup this week. Truck plowing on Tuesday cost $500,000. The total balloons to $4 million when residential plowing is added in.
The city has budgeted about $26 million for snow-clearing this year.
Last week, city officials revealed it cost $11 million to clear snow from city streets in January -- nearly twice as much as the $6 million the city budgeted.
On March 4, 1966, Winnipeg received 35.6 centimetres of snow in a single day -- the record for a single day in March.
The city will start to plow residential streets Thursday at 7 a.m. A residential parking ban will be in effect Thursday morning and continue to Saturday at 7 p.m. Residents who live in snow zones slated to be plowed need to move their vehicles.
Vehicles parked in violation of the residential parking ban will receive a $150 ticket, $75 if paid early, and may be towed to a nearby street.
