DNA says skinned animal a coyote

A skinned animal propped up beside a highway was a coyote and not a family pet.

Steinbach RCMP said Wednesday the Office of the Chief Veterinarian made the determination after examining the animal's remains and having samples sent for DNA analysis.

The remains were discovered in a ditch in the RM of Hanover on Jan. 9.

The discovery came at a time when area residents feared their pets were being stolen and didn't know what was happening to them.

Tax evasion earns man $25K fine

A Winnipeg man has been fined $25,491 for tax evasion after trying to avoid paying $33,988 in taxes.

Samuel Nagler, 56, was fined Wednesday after pleading guilty in provincial court.

The Canada Revenue Agency said in a statement Nagler created false business invoices to reduce his income tax from 2005 to 2008.

The CRA says the fine is 75 per cent of the evaded taxes.

Nurse practitioners' role expands

MANITOBA is expanding the role of the province's nurse practitioners by allowing them to authorize MRIs for patients.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald announced the move Wednesday. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with a master's-level education and clinical experience that allows them to diagnose illnesses, treat conditions, prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. More than 100 nurse practitioners work in health-care facilities across the province, including hospitals, QuickCare Clinics, primary-care clinics and personal care homes.

Oswald said the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba supported the government's decision to allow nurse practitioners to order magnetic resonance imaging tests.
