New development behind

THE development of the Fort Rouge Yards into a new residential neighbourhood is behind schedule.

On Tuesday, developer Gem Equities will ask city council's property committee to grant the company an additional six months to complete the rezoning and subdivision of the land, which sits alongside the first phase of the Southwest Transitway.

The city and province plan to use property taxes from new developments along the transitway to pay back $90 million in loans taken out to build the bus corridor.

Council property chairman Jeff Browaty (North Kildonan) said he is confident Gem Equities will proceed with its development. The city has guaranteed a loan to the company.

Province adds residencies

MANITOBA will add 15 new medical residency positions and expand doctor recruitment at a cost of $4.5 million this year.

Premier Greg Selinger and Health Minister Theresa Oswald made the announcement Friday at the University of Manitoba's downtown campus on McDermot Avenue.

The new medical residencies will include seven in family medicine in rural Manitoba and eight specialist residencies in Winnipeg in emergency medicine, adolescent psychiatry, vascular surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology.

The government will also spend more money to help foreign-trained doctors obtain licences to practice in Manitoba and will offer grants to cover the full cost of medical training for up to 23 more students who agree to practise in under-serviced communities after they graduate.
