Local naughty librarians needed for spelling bee

GET OUT YOUR HORNY-RIMMED GLASSES: Accomplished spellers are needed for the first ever Naughty Librarian Sexy Spelling Bee at Club 200. It's the brainchild of the Rainbow Resource Centre, created to fundraise for Youth Educating Against Homophobia (YEAH). The program provides education and awareness to middle schools and high schools in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on sexual orientation, gender identity, sexual difference phobias and bullying.
Close to 20 contestants will be on a stage best known for flamboyant drag shows and dance parties. Words are sexual and health-based, such as pachyhymenia or Pyronie's disease (look it up, dear) plus old-fashioned words such as a "ploot," which your grandma might tell you is a woman of loose morals. To sign up for the Sept. 28 spell-down, call Jared at the Rainbow Centre (284-5208).
All are encouraged to show up in naughty librarian costumes, for prizes. Drag queen Simara Styles is calling the words. Sexologist Reece Malone will step in when a contestant asks for a sentence or the meaning of a word.
"I'm their Dr. Ruth," says Malone, with his book of sexual words, The Bald Headed Hermit, in one hand. The goal is to raise $3,000. Admission is $5 "and more if you like."

NEW RESTAURANT VOWS TO SUCCEED: A colourful new La Bamba restaurant snuck open last week on Corydon Avenue near Hugo Street. You can't miss it this week because it's decorated in razzle-dazzle Mexican party style -- orange walls, red and black umbrellas, strings of party lights overhead, plus Mexican chef Denia Morales in the kitchen. And here's the Winnipeg factor -- business buddies Edgar Rascon, a Corydon-area kid whose family's from Chihuahua, Mexico, met Juan Godinez, from Mexico City, when they co-ordinated a Folklorama pavilion together.
This is the fourth restaurant in recent years on this spot, but they say they have an advantage. Why?
"Most Mexican restaurants in Western Canada are run by people from Central American countries. But we use the old traditional Mexican recipes," says Godinez. "These other people don't have the 'mazon,' the magic for cooking, like we do."
On Sept. 15, chef Morales says her husband plans to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day by jumping on the roof and shouting the names of the emancipators and "Viva, Mexico!" Corydon will never be the same.
Mariachi Ghost will play on the patio Sept. 1.

PINK EXPERIMENT TONIGHT: The Juss Jazz club is trying to keep career women downtown tonight until 1 a.m. -- with gallons of pink girly drinks, a retro glam fashion show with the Foxy Shoppe and wild hairstyles from Hair F/X, plus tables of jewelry and clothes and on-the-spot nail services. Music starts mid-evening with Mississippi stompin' blues woman Claire Bestland, followed by Lee Venaus and her Blue Noise Band -- Lee Michaels (guitar), Dave Tourney (bass) and Greg Parnell (drums). Tickets are $20 at the door (drinks and food not included).

CARNAVAL WEEKEND: Mariachi Ghost will also play this weekend at the first Carnaval Street Party, with Marco Castillo and his band. Check out performances by Latin dancer Marcia Monteggio and other acts organized by Alejandro Mora. The party goes 7-11 tonight and 5-11 p.m. Saturday on Bannatyne Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive. Co-hosting this event are Corrientes Pizzeria and Boon Burger. The Alive in the District nightclub and Hermanos Restaurant and Wine Bar bookend the action.
