Lots of help after wheelchair ramp stolen

THE family of a 20-year-old quadriplegic whose wheelchair ramp went missing said they're touched by an outpouring of support by Manitobans.

Perry Roberts said the family has been contacted by people wanting to help after the loss of his daughter Tanis's ramp from outside their Portage la Prairie home.

Tanis Roberts, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, depends on the ramp so she can use her family's van.

After the story was picked up by the Free Press and other media, people contacted the family, either offering a replacement ramp or to buy another ramp.

"It's fantastic that people would do that for us," said Perry Roberts, who called the support "overwhelming."

The family is planning to open a trust account for donations to get a permanent ramp installed on their van.

"We're kind of hesitant because we'd like to see somebody return the ramp that we do have, but the support that we're getting not just from Portage but from Winnipeg as well is just fantastic," said Roberts.

Roberts said he's hopeful the missing ramp will still be returned.

"Come and drop it off. If I see you, I'll turn away," he said.
