Mailbox unit robbed

WINNIPEG police are warning homeowners to watch their mail after a Canada Post community mail unit was robbed overnight in a south Winnipeg residential subdivision.

"Other than to ensure you pick up your mail on a regular basis, just be aware of this as a possibility," Const. Eric Hofley said Friday when the theft was reported.

Police believe the mailbox module was robbed between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. The unit involved locked boxes that were broken into, police said.

Identity theft may be the greatest risk of mail theft, but cheques are often sent sent in the mail, police said.

Police remind the public to have mail forwarded or held at the post office when they are on summer vacation.
