POLICE continued their investigation Sunday night into a stabbing earlier in the day that sent a young man to hospital in critical condition.

Residents of Toronto Street, in the West End, said they were surprised to hear and see what appeared to be dozens of police, paramedics and firefighters rush to their quiet neighbourhood around 2 a.m. Sunday.

The emergency crews were responding to the report of an assault in the 200 block of Toronto St., just north of Portage Avenue.

What they found was a 21-year-old man in front of a small house at 267 Toronto St., suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The man was in critical condition when he was taken to hospital.

"I couldn't tell who it was but the paramedics were giving him CPR," a neighbour said.

Const. Jason Michalyshyn said the victim remained in critical condition late Sunday afternoon, adding however there was no update into the investigation.

The woman said others she spoke to on the street said the victim's attacker still carried the knife when he ran away.

"No one heard anything," said a man who was visiting a Toronto Street residence. "I came outside for a cigarette and saw all the flashing lights, cops and paramedics.

"People up and down the street came out to see what was going on."

The woman said a young family had moved into 267 Toronto St. about four or five months ago.

"I don't know them but the police have been there about twice a week since they moved in," the woman said. "I don't know why."

Yellow police tape surrounded the front yard of 267 Toronto St., where a police cruiser with two officers remained parked in front of the home.

The woman said police placed three individuals in cruisers early Sunday morning.
