Man, 24, charged with murder in 2011 Osborne Village killing

  • Print

A 24-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in a two-year-old murder case.

Police had responded to a large brawl outside the Osborne Village Inn on Aug. 5, 2011, where they found a seriously injured man, Baljinder Singh Sidhu, 27. Sidhu was taken to hospital and died from stab wounds.

A meticulous investigation followed and resulted in the arrest of Zeljko Mikic, 24, who has been charged with second-degree murder. He is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

"A pretty chaotic scene is the best way to describe" what police encountered that August morning in 2011, said WPS spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen. "A number of individuals were involved in a very serious fight.

"It took us time to identify individuals, it took us time to gather facts, information, with respect to a possible suspect."

Michalyshen said it's believed participants in the street brawl had gang ties.

There were 41 homicides in 2011, a record for Winnipeg. Michalyshen said arrests have been made in all but three of those cases.
