A driver trying to evade police Wednesday in Transcona plowed through the side doors of the East End Community Club about 2 a.m., damaging the ice plant.
Police said they attempted to stop a vehicle being driven by a man who was a suspect in a domestic incident. The vehicle took off and police followed with lights and sirens on -- but a spokesman with the Winnipeg Police Service said it was not a pursuit.
The man "made every effort to evade" officers, police say, and slammed into the arena on Pandora Avenue East.
He was taken to hospital and charges are pending.
The crash caused what was believed a gas leak. Several homes in the area had to be evacuated because of the leak, but only for a few hours.
A memorial service planned Wednesday for a Winnipeg man had to be moved from the arena to another location. The service for Brad Little, who died suddenly on Oct. 24, was being moved to a hall at Club Regent Casino Hotel.
A notice on the arena's website said Little was "an active member of the community and was involved in coaching and playing his favourite sport, hockey. Brad spent many hours volunteering at the rink and served on many boards in the community. He was the vice-president of sports with East End Community Club."
