Man killed in truck collision

ONE Winnipeg man was killed and another Winnipeg man taken to hospital after two pickup trucks collided south of Winnipeg early Sunday morning.

Sources confirmed Sunday that the victim is 19-year-old Tyler Dacquay of Winnipeg, who graduated from Glenlawn Collegiate last June.

Dacquay was pronounced dead on the scene while the driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital in unstable condition, said Const. Jacqueline Chaput. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Winnipeg police officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 4:20 a.m. By 9 a.m., they had placed a couple of dozen numbered evidence markers along the southbound lane of St. Mary's Road, several kilometres south of the Perimeter Highway, where it appeared one vehicle had skidded off the road.

It appeared as if the smashed-up vehicles -- a Ford F-150 and a GMC 4X4 -- came to rest on opposite sides of the road. A solitary dark baseball cap lay on the shoulder.

St. Mary's was closed to traffic in both directions for several hours while Winnipeg police and RCMP conducted their investigation.

Const. Jacqueline Chaput said it has not yet been determined whether speed, alcohol or weather conditions played a role in the crash. It is not known at this time if either man was wearing a seatbelt.
