Man pleads guilty in boating death

A Winnipeg man has admitted fault in a deadly boating accident on the Assiniboine River near The Forks in 2011.

Johnny Roy Petriew, 36, pleaded guilty Thursday to dangerous driving under the Criminal Code. He will be sentenced next year, after he finishes a substance-abuse program, court was told.

Petriew was charged with impaired operation of a vessel and failure to provide breath samples. The Crown agreed to drop those charges in exchange for his guilty plea to dangerous driving. No further details of the plea bargain were provided.

Petriew was rescued from the Assiniboine in May 2011, but his 37-year-old friend, David Gordon Morris, did not resurface. Police say their investigation showed the two men were operating a four-metre aluminum fishing boat with a small-horsepower tiller motor. The boat capsized as it approached The Forks and both men, who weren't wearing life-jackets, fell into the river.

Boating on Winnipeg rivers was declared illegal at the time due to dangerous flood waters.

Petriew has six impaired driving charges on his record.
