Man shot to death downtown
No arrests made yet in death of 20-year-old
A 20-year-old man shot Friday in broad daylight downtown has become Winnipeg's 10th homicide victim of the year.
The man died early Saturday morning. Police were not releasing his name until his next of kin had been notified, Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said Saturday.
The young man was taken to the Health Sciences Centre by car in critical condition with upper-body injuries early Friday evening.
Police were notified that shots were fired about 6:25 p.m. on Young Street near the north side of Portage Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they learned the young victim had been taken to hospital by a car driven by the man's friends.
A worker in a nearby business, who didn't want to be identified, said he didn't see anything, but he did hear something.
"I heard some gunshots," he said.
"I don't know how many -- I thought somebody was stoning my car. Then I heard a boom."
The man said he was busy at the time but a few minutes later when he looked outside into the parking lot in the rear, he saw his car was parked at a bit of an angle.
"I thought I'd parked it straight in," he said.
A few minutes later, police officers showed him scrapes at the rear of his vehicle and told him it had been pushed sideways when another vehicle struck the rear corner of his as it was speeding away with the victim.
Jeff Bishop, an owner of The Sounds Exchange at Portage and Young, said police had the rear parking lot cordoned off shortly after the shots were fired until about 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
"Am I afraid? -- no," Bishop said.
"The person who was shot probably knows who it was. If you're just out there doing your own thing you'll be OK. This is a safe neighbourhood -- we've never been robbed."
Michalyshen said police are still trying to determine what sparked the shooting.
He said that it appears the man and his friends were confronted and shots were fired.
No gun was recovered nor were any suspects arrested, Micalyshen said Saturday.
Police were still interviewing a number of witnesses, he said.
