Police arrest 28 in Portage drug bust

A raid targeting street-level drugs in Portage la Prairie has led to the arrest of 28 people, and police are hunting for two more suspects.

The bust happened Wednesday after months of investigation dating from last October.

Police seized more than $20,000 worth of drugs such ecstasy, MDMA, marijuana and different forms of cocaine. Officers from the Portage RCMP detachment, its investigation section, the RCMP emergency response team and police-dog unit participated in the takedown, known as Project Demerit.

Chief Supt. Scott Kolody said the investigation targeted "foot soldiers" of organized crime. "They're suppliers of drugs in rural Manitoba."

Three guns were seized -- a handgun, sawed-off shotgun and rifle -- plus a machete, brass knuckles and a collapsible baton.

Bisons footballer accused of extortion

A University of Manitoba Bisons football player wanted in the United States for extortion was arrested Thursday in Winnipeg.

He was arrested Thursday at 4:30 p.m. near the U of M campus at Kings Drive and Freedman Crescent. Delano Tennent, 23, of Edmonton, is in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

Public asked to help locate Gimli woman

Police said Hambleton is described as Caucasian, 5-10, 150 pounds, with long, blond hair and blue eyes, and has a tattoo with the letters DJ on the back of her neck.

She was driving a red 2001 Ford Escape with Manitoba licence plate FZZ 585.

Springfield hires ex-NDP minister as CAO

THE RM of Springfield has hired Scott Smith, a former NDP cabinet minister and MLA for Brandon West, as its new chief administrative officer.

Smith will have his work cut out for him dealing with a badly divided council.

Springfield made headlines last year when three councillors staged a coup. While other councillors were away, the trio rehired former chief administrator Larry Tetrault, who stepped down a month earlier, but the councillors maintained he was pushed out and wanted him back. Their move was found to be in violation of the Municipal Act, so Tetrault returned to retirement.
