Mayor, challenger oppose 'sign pollution'
Katz, Wasylycia-Leis campaign slogans take subtle swipes
Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz's first campaign promise is about his re-election campaign.
The Katz campaign is pledging not to place any campaign signs on public property in an effort to reduce what the incumbent mayor's campaign manager calls "sign pollution" during the civic election campaign.
A tale of two taglines
Winnipeg's two leading mayoral candidates have unveiled their campaign slogans -- and they appear to be about each other:
Sam Katz
Slogan: "Proven Results, Real Leadership"
What it says about himself: You know me, you trust me.
What it suggests about Judy Wasylycia-Leis: She's never been mayor, she's never been in power and she's only been a member of a supporting cast at the legislature or in Parliament.
Judy Wasylycia-Leis
Slogan: "A safer, fairer, greener, better Winnipeg."
What it says about herself: It's time for a change.
What it suggests about Sam Katz: He hasn't done enough about crime, doesn't care enough about the environment and values some Winnipeggers over others.

Starting on Saturday, registered mayoral and council candidates will be allowed to place campaign signs on some public spaces.
But Katz signs will only go up on private property, and even then only by request, said campaign manager Marni Larkin.
"Sign pollution is not only a visual blight, but a safety concern in areas that can hinder traffic or damage public property," she said in a statement, urging all other candidates in the general election to follow suit.
Mayoral challenger Judy Wasylycia-Leis, however, also isn't planning to place signs on public property.
"I'm old school. Boulevards don't vote," said Nicole Campbell, Wasylycia-Leis' campaign manager. "At this time, it's not part of our strategy."
Wasylycia-Leis' campaign signs, which bear the slogan "A safer, fairer, greener, better Winnipeg" come in both Tory blue and NDP orange.
Katz's signs are green and bear the slogan "Proven Results, Real Leadership." The slogan builds on his 2004 slogan, "I like results, I like Sam."
