Mill's bid to dump pollution control to be reviewed

THE province's Clean Environment Commission will review Louisiana Pacific's bid to remove its Swan River mill's pollution control devices, Conservation Minister Stan Struthers said Monday.

L-P made the request to turn off its regenerative thermal oxidizers several weeks ago. RTOs use natural gas to burn off pollutants. The company says the plant, which produces oriented strand board, a common building material, could save about $3 million a year in natural gas and maintenance.

"Our job is environmental protection whether the economy is up or down," Struthers said.

There is no timeline yet on how the CEC will deal with the matter, which has split the northern community for the second time in two decades.
