Motorcycle passenger run over

WHITBY, Ont. -- A motorcycle passenger who fell off the vehicle as police attempted to stop it was run over by one or more passing vehicles, police said.

Neither the driver of the motorcycle, who sped off, nor drivers in the other vehicles stopped to assist the victim, media reports said.

The disturbing incident, which occurred Friday night on a busy stretch of Highway 401 near Whitby, follows another a week earlier in which a man lay dying on a Calgary highway ramp as car after car drove past without stopping.

Friday night's crash occurred as Durham police tried to signal the driver to pull over near Whitby, east of Toronto. Instead, the motorcycle sped up and that's when the passenger fell off into the busy roadway.

The motorcycle continued and the passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was then struck by one or more vehicles.

Ontario's special investigations unit, which is involved whenever there is a serious injury or death involving a police officer, is investigating.

The victim of the Aug. 20 Calgary accident also died.
