Motorcyclist and officer in hospital after crash

AN RCMP officer and a motorcyclist are in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a motorcycle and a cruiser collided on southbound Highway 59 just before 6 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The collision happened on the bridge over the floodway near Springhill Winter Sports Park south of Garven Road. RCMP are investigating the cause of the accident.

"We're still trying to pull it all together, what happened," said Sgt. Line Karpish, RCMP spokeswoman.

Norm Babuik said he was driving home from his cabin at Victoria Beach when he saw a police cruiser chasing more than a dozen motorcyclists just south of Birds Hill Provincial Park.

"All of a sudden these motorcyclists were just zooming in-between cars," he said.

He said they looked to be going at least 130 kilometres an hour.

"These guys were really driving dangerously," he said. "They looked like they were going to cause an accident among themselves."

The police cruiser was trying to catch up with them, he said, with its sirens and lights on.

Moments after the motorcycles and police car passed him, he arrived at the scene of the accident.

The police cruiser's front bumper and grille were completely torn off. The cruiser sat across both southbound lanes, while the motorcycle lay on its side a few metres away.

Southbound lanes of Highway 59 were closed and a detour at Garven Road was in effect Sunday evening.

Witnesses are asked to call Selkirk RCMP Traffic Services at 204-482-8114.
