New deadline to remove large, illegal sign

The owners of Portage Avenue’s Boyd Building have been given until Aug. 1 to remove an illegal sign that has irked residents of downtown apartment buildings since 2010.

In 2010, the owners of the Boyd Building erected a three-storey electronic sign without any city permits and in the face of a stop-work order. The city ordered it removed in late 2010 and again in early 2011, when the sign was switched off.

On June 1, a provincial court gave the owners 60 days to remove the sign for good, city spokeswoman Michelle Bailey said Monday.

"The matter is the result of common offence notices that were issued about a year ago due to the fact that the permit that was issued for signage was not for the sign that eventually went up," Bailey said in a statement.

Daniel McIntyre Coun. Harvey Smith, whose ward include apartments in the Portage-Ellice neighbourhood, said in a statement the building’s owners pleaded guilty to non-compliance.

Smith thanked residents of Fred Douglas Lodge for bringing the sign issue to the city’s attention.
