No date for IKEA opening
Website shows incorrect info
Do not book Dec. 5 off work to join in the mayhem of IKEA Winnipeg's grand opening.
The website for IKEA Services, which owns the trademark for the Swedish-based furniture giant, mistakenly listed Dec. 5 as the opening date for "Winnepeg" on a ticker of new store openings.
It's not that the 395,000-square-foot location won't open around then, it's just that Canadian officials have yet to make a final determination on a ribbon-cutting date.
"That's the international website. We weren't aware it was showing incorrect information. That date is very old. We've put in a (request) to have it corrected," said Madeleine Lwenborg-Frick, public relations manager for IKEA Canada.
It is expected that error will have been removed first thing Wednesday morning in Sweden or in the middle of night in Winnipeg.
"The international crew is working on a projected opening date. Dec. 5 was projected when we got approval to build the Winnipeg store."
It's hoped a firm opening date, sometime in late November or early December, will be announced next month, Lwenborg-Frick said.
About 200 workers are currently on the construction site near the intersection of Sterling Lyon Parkway and Kenaston Boulevard in southwest Winnipeg. The building is expected to be closed in shortly. The next steps are doing the interior finishing and then a small army of workers who have opened stores around the world will descend on it to stock the shelves.
More than 3,000 online applications have been received since IKEA announced in late June that it would hire 300 to 350 workers for the Winnipeg store.
