No plans for mosquito fogging

THERE will be no mosquito fogging in Winnipeg in the foreseeable future, as trap counts remain low across the city.

The city-wide average trap count for mosquitoes was eight on Thursday. Trap counts need to exceed 25 for two consecutive nights -- and exceed 100 in one quadrant of the city -- before nuisance fogging for mosquitoes may commence.

Earlier this year, following significant spring rains, city entomologist Taz Stuart said there was potential for a "major emergence" of mosquitoes this summer. But the insect-control branch has successfully applied larvicides to bodies of standing water in and around the city, Stuart said Thursday.

A combination of larviciding and warm weather has reduced the potential for lots of summer bugs, he added.

"There's only an expectation of a small emergence over the next seven to 14 days," Stuart said, warning that could change if heavy rains douse the city in the coming weeks.

He also thanked Winnipeggers for eliminating standing water on their properties and encouraged them to continue to do so to prevent mosquito larvae from developing into adults.

Adult mosquitoes emerging in Winnipeg are both nuisance species and varieties that can carry disease. The emergence of the latter is small, however.

Nonetheless, the city has started applying permethrin, a pesticide, to foliage in parks and wooded areas, Stuart said.

Areas outside of Winnipeg, where there are no larviciding programs, have more mosquitoes, he said.
